Yesterday I saw a tiny ladybird perched on the doorframe of our bathroom. I've adored ladybirds since I was a child - don't you remember encouraging them to walk off that leaf on to your fingertip, to feel the delicate tickling as they meandered around in exploration? We also had some ladybird magnets on our fridge at home - I think there is still one left, but very faded, minus feelers, etc. I'm going to make some new fimo and felt magnets for my mum today. (as well as cutting out the quilt!) I also learned to read mostly through Ladybird books, though the first book I read by myself, when I was five, was 'The Land of Green Ginger' by Noel Langley, one of the writers on the film 'The Wizard of Oz'. Aladdin was the hero, I think his sidekick was Boomalackawee, and one of the baddies was called Tin Tac Ping Foo. Very un-PC now, and it wasn't even the unabridged version - which I'd love to find - but very much in a pantomime tradition. From the opening:
May fortune preserve you, gentle reader. May your days be filled with constant joy, and may my story please you, for it has no other purpose.
It might not be PC. But it's from a gentler age, I think.
On our honeymoon in Italy, we were told that ladybirds are a symbol of good luck, along with the cornucopia, or horn of plenty; the four leaf clover, no surprises there; and the chili. Eh? Yesterday after seeing the ladybird, I got news that a business deal that we're working on, which had turned rather cold, has moved on significantly. I'm not spending that money until it arrives in my bank account, but it's nice to think that it's less of a pipe dream and inching closer to reality. It would take off some of the pressure for a while.
Ok, I spent a bit of it. I visited Loop and bought four balls of wool on sale, and a crochet hook. What a simply fantastic shop, fully of multicoloured goodies. When I am rich*, I will be buying half of their inventory and the four foot long needles from Wool n Boat. What a beautiful shop, and the owner is so helpful. Then I got Debbie Stoller's the Happy Hooker and sat there in front of the TV - can't help it, I hate myself for it but needed to know who was going back into the Big Brother house - and got very frustrated. So I frogged it (so glad she explained what that means!) and redid it. Twice. And by the end of it, I had three rows of crochet. Progress!
Ok, housework, and then craftyness.... as Miss Dottie would say, 'Good Crafternoon!'
*I've bought a lottery ticket, so you never know...
L is for Lucky Me! To have found such a lovely blog as yours!
I fear I may become addicted to your blog--such nice writing and goodies in every entry.
And thanks for passing along the good crafternoon vibe. May the forces of craft be with you!
